WashGuys Founder's Forecast in May of 2001 Becoming Industry Standard

In May of 2001 Mr. Winslow, founder of WashGuys challenged the entire car wash industry before the 2001 International Car Wash Convention in Las Vegas NV, to straighten up the Industry. Here is part of his challenge, citing twelve changes needed to bring the Industry into the New Millennium:

"Every time we read what the associations are doing to police themselves and make policy, we see a rather slow to change attitude. Why not be aggressive for the right reasons and lift the industry and the customer confidence in all the car washes throughout the country?

Sample Aggressive Rules to fix the Car Wash Industry.

  1. A car wash must only use 5 gallons per car or face water restrictions or be shut down. The earth is overpopulated enough that we need to conserve this natural resource.
  2. A customer should be able expect a car wash in five minutes or less.
  3. A car wash should remain open at least 2 hours after people get off of work for convenience. Shutting down early is not fair to customers. Especially in high employment eras.
  4. A car wash should be liable if an employee steals something out of some ones car.
  5. A car wash should be liable for the wash process, including the damage they cause to vehicles. Signs and disclaimers of "We Are Not Liable" are wrong. Of course you are liable when you are in the care, custody and control of that vehicle. Garage Keepers liability is not expensive if you have no claims.
  6. A car wash should give back to the community it serves. Not condemn car wash fundraisers. Many independent washes are good about this. Why not all of them.
  7. A car wash should recycle their water until they reach the 5-gallon maximum per car usage. Anymore with current technology is a waste of our natural resources and we are smarter than that.
  8. A car wash must hire competent people. A car wash is responsible for the crime it generates in a community when it hires malcontents. Also it should do everything possible to mitigate the crime it brings to the community. Example, put in nighttime flood lights to prevent rape, attacks and burglary.
  9. A car wash is responsible for the 8 gallons of water that drips out of the cracks and from the undercarriage onto the street when the car leaves as well as any accidents the wet concrete causes on a dry day or the ice that it forms on an extremely cold day. That water has petroleum distillates in it, heavy metals and asbestos, it collects in the same place everyday and enters the nearest storm drain. Every day same place and same build up.
  10. A car wash should respect the traffic flow in and out of their car wash. Causing bottlenecks because you wanted to maximize the property to put in additional profit centers is not the cities fault or even the passer by who needs to pick up their kids from school or buy groceries. Why should they be unconvinced, they are your potential customers.
  11. A car wash should not up-sell more than once, when talking to customers or try to bully their way into a higher ticket if the car wash customer has already said no. Would you want them up-selling your mother, pressing her into something she did not want? Do not answer that.
  12. A car wash should fix immediately any customer complaints with the quality of work and immediately refund money or re-wash. Yet so many times we here customers say I told them and they said that is what you get. Well that is not right. Most car washes will re-wash or refund, why not all?

"I do not believe this is too much to ask of an industry, yet every year the goals of the industry experts and leaders fall short of what is fair to the customer and what is right for the world. Perhaps as not to offend to many members, perhaps it is greed, yet we all know we can do better. So why not do better together.

This is not only a challenge to the industry, this is what will be necessary for longevity of it."

Thank you for listening,

Lance Winslow

Today, just over a year later those changes are coming about. The ICA, International Carwash Association has sponsored training on saving water due to drought situations in North America. Many large consolidating Car Wash Companies such as Mister Carwash have adopted 5 minute wash policies, no waiting or bottleneck traffic flows, flex service with no upsell and responsible employee policies. Other Car Wash chains such as WashDepot, Mace Holdings, CarSpa, Splash . As a matter of fact this years listing of the Power Inc. Car Wash Survey shows that nearly all of the top 50 consolidated carwashes in North America have adopted 5 or more of Mr. Winslow's challenges of last year.  Nearly all of these companies have adopted safer car wash chemical procedures, water saving systems and community volunteerism. Other major players have adopted incredible standards in Image like SuperWash Franchise Systems.

At the time many in the Industry jeered Mr. Winslow's comments such as Industry Leader, John Moran who said in an article with Professional Car Washing and Detailing Magazine;

"What world do you live in? Surely not the same as the rest of us? What you are describing is a Utopian fantasy. Why don't you open up one of these full serve car washes and call it, The Utopian Fantasy Car Wash. Please show all of us moron's how it is done. By the way do you ever sleep, or do you stay up all night dreaming this stuff up?"

But never the less the challenge is being met due to the vision of our founder to deliver to the customers, that which they desire. Even more interesting was this weeks announcement that the major industry magazine was not only adopting the community based carwashing, but sponsoring a non-profit group to do charity carwashes nationwide. They are now the official sponsors of WashUSA. Even the ICA and WCA, which in 2000 made it a point to try to limit or have carwash fundraisers from kids groups banned due to the fact it was costing them business, have dropped those efforts. They were using tactics similar to that of the Sierra Club to curtail the fundraisers claiming violations of 13.260 of California Water Code in Southern CA, Fish and Game in Puget Sound region of Washington State and Federal Clean Water Act in other parts of the country. This made for a consumer back lash. Meanwhile our company was being awarded for our assistance to the common good;

Our company and our company alone, along with the vision of our team has brought about great and positive changes in the Car Wash Industry and we will continue to peddle past the name calling in search of our victory in the market. It is for that reason we have forced others to adapt to a higher standard or exit the market place. Today nearly every major Car Wash Association in the US is sponsoring or calling for some type of charity car wash fundraisers to help the youth of our country grow up to be hard working and good citizens to lead our future. Here is an example of what we have bought about in only 14 months in the industry;

As a matter of fact in a brash and challenging way we have systematically changed the industry into our image and we have uplifted the dirty image of the former car wash industry adding a larger customer base for us and all other market participants. Yes we have helped eliminate a few through these market demands, however the consumer is thankful for the changes as the vote with their dollars to more frequent crashing at professional car washes like those of the WashGuys https://www.carwashguy.com   and the rest of the industry which are willing to follow the new higher standard. Today Wash Guys belong to no Car Wash Associations, we just command them to see our will for the benefit of the consumer, environment and future success of the industry, and to think that most of this started with a kid washing airplanes, who eventually wrote the book on Community Based Car Wash Fundraisers, as good clean fun to unite young and old, teach respect and service and raise millions of dollars a year cleaning the World one car at a time, with the help of thousands of Industry Active Car Wash Owners across this Great Nation.

Today all 50 of the top car wash chains in the Nation subscribe to more than half of our original initiatives of May of 2001. We are watching as the winners and losers in the market place are no separated by only these upgrades in the industry. We are now working on raising the bar in January of 2003 as soon as the market leaders catch up to all 12 of our visions for the industry. We have single handedly brought awareness to the entire industry through our challenging of old thought processes and conventional wisdom. We will continue to change, modify and up lift this industry for the betterment of all.

This proves when your mission is noble and you commit to go the distance you will always win in the end. We win Again, thank you Team !!!
